These are my final concept art boards. I created the last one by painting a mock up of a background, as I don't entirely know what style the backgrounds will be in yet. This is mainly useful for seeing the character's sizes in relation to one another, as well as seeing them together.
Overrall I think my character design's are pretty strong. I think the main elements that are successful was their readability, as well as how they relate to each other through their "crowns" and other features, such as how skulk is the opposite of beram in design - dark, desaturated, tall, thin, almost no skin exposed.
I think that Daisy being Beram's daughter is also communicated well through her design in terms of both her likeness - she has the same: teeth, but oversized for her as if she is going to grow into them; nose and stubby arms and legs; skin colour and the same large mouth. As well as through her differences: she has a permanent smile rather than Beram's frown to indicate her joy contrasting with Beram's sullenness; her head is oversized compared to her body, to help highlight how young she is; her eyes are large and bright and her dress is much lighter and brighter than Beram's cloak. I think these differences help highlight how she's not only Beram's daughter, but someone who maked Beram better.
I also think Beram's design is particularly strong because of its simplicity. His simple colour scheme and strong silhouette makes him easy to read at small sizes, which is particularly useful in my short as he will be far back in the screen often.
To improve, I think I could:
- Draw more dynamic poses, and see how far I can push his design as it's quite limited in movement due to the smaller limbs
- Draw a bigger variety of facial expressions, as at the moment they're limited to distraught. I think experimenting and trying to come up with much more nuanced happy expressions would benefit his design greatly as his mouth is quite hard to make look happy
- Make Beram's body a little shorter as it's a bit too long at the moment. I also don't like how his body is split almost evenly in half with his chest and stomach, maybe I could bring his chest up a bit more to make it into thirds as that's more appealing.
- Re-design Skulk's cloak a bit more, to make it feel like the material is resting more naturally and more flowy
